October 2010 Newsletter


Time for fall hikes, nature watching, leaf rubbings, pumpkin patches and apple picking, hay rides and campfires, what's not to love about autumn?!

Meet at Deb Penley's home to make pottery (think Christmas gifts!).  
The cost will be $3 to make a small item, $5 for the larger items.  This will cover the cost of materials.

DETAILS:  All Homeschooling Families are invited to Homeschool Paintball Day at the Wilson's.   Dad's and Kid's will be playing paintball!      
The Wilson's have 45 acres and have 15 paintball guns and all supplies needed to play.  
Bring your own equipment if you like, but it's not necessary.

This is a FREE event.
            
Wear layered clothing, the paintballs do sting if you get hit.

The Wilson's will be providing a hot dog dinner.

Jamestown Audubon Homeschool Day

Wednesday November 17th   10am to 12 pm 
with an optional walk with anaturalist in the afternoon.
This time the topic will be all about Bears!

Fall Testing is October 11th, for 3rd, 5th and 8th graders.
Testing will be held with the PA Homeschoolers at Praise Fellowship Church.
Cost is $30 per child, if you pre-register postmarked October 7th or

YMCA Swim Lessons for Homeschoolers

  The next 5-week session will begin on Fri., October 15th.  Grades 5-8 will meet from 10:30-11:00am and grades 1-4 will have lessons from 11:00-11:30 am.  Cost is $13/session for members and $41 for non-members.  YMCA Membership for one youth is $124.

From Nan: Please let others who may not be on this email list know about this opportunity.  I have found from my own personal experience that I would rather go in the morning than late afternoon when I need to be getting dinner together.  This is also a great opportunity for our kids to get to know each other a little better.  Sign up is going on now.  Questions call Cathy Peterson at 726-0110.

  Tips, Advice and Ideas!

"When working in a workbook that you hate to let the kids write in - because you don't want to spend the money on another workbook or because you might not find another just like it or ....  Try using a sheet protector or clear report cover, a clip(to hold it in place), and dry erase markers.
  I found a pack of 5 different color dry-erase markers with erasers built right on the lids at Walmart for a few dollars that work really well and the whole thing is so portable.  Just initial the page once the child has done it and it is ready for the next child to use!!"

 HSLDA Essay Contest
Submission Dates:  October 1st through November 1, 2010

Category 1/Ages 7-10 - If you were asked to create a new invention to be used in 2011, what would it be, and how would it be valuable? 

Category 2/Ages 11-14 -   In 1620 the first pilgrims who landed in America wrote and signed a document called the Mayflower Compact.
Compare and contrast the attitude, passion and goals of the first pilgrims with James Truslow Adam’s definition of the “American Dream.” The term was believed to be first coined in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states: The American Dream is “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”

Category 3/Ages 15-19 - Read the following essay on a famous, old story that offers a new and controversial twist: “In Defense of Scrooge.” Write an essay in response to this author’s opinion. You may choose one or several points to address.
 
Category 1: Homeschoolers ages 7 to 10 as of October 1, 2010.
Category 2: Homeschoolers ages 11 to 14 as of October 1, 2010.
Category 3: Homeschoolers ages 15 to 19 as of October 1, 2010.

 HSLDA Commercial Video Contest
Submission Dates August 16th - November 15th

This contest is open to anyone.  Each entrant will submit a video commercial that illustrates the value of HSLDA membership to a family. Videos will be a minimum of 60 seconds and may not exceed 90 seconds.

Struthers Library Theatre Arts & Education Program

The following plays are FREE for the student in the specified grade, and the parent, only.  
No siblings in other grades please.
If your other children and/or whole family would like to attend, the plays will also perform in the evening, which cost $5 per student, $10 per adult.

    September Field Trip Re-Cap
On September 29th, several families met at Port Farms for a fun fall field trip.  First, we took a wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch where we each chose our favorite pumpkin to bring home.  After exploring the different areas, we all met at the barn for lunch.  We were blessed with decent weather and everyone had a great time!

A few of us also went out to the Lander Fire Department Community Safety Day.  The kids learned about fire safety, escape routes, got to watch the helicopter land and then tour it and even met Smokey the Bear.

August/September 2010 Newsletter

Back to school time is here once again!
We kicked off our school year with a picnic and  beach party at Chapman Dam on August 21st.  
We had great food, fun games and school supplies for treats as everyone went home.  The guys won the sandcastle building contest with their alligator creation on the shoreline.  The girls turned Natalie into an adorable sand mermaid.   It was great to see so many of you and celebrate the new school year!

Fall Testing is October 11th, for 3rd, 5th and 8th graders.

FIELDTRIP #1

Date:  Wednesday, September 29th
Place:  Port Farms, Waterford, PA (near Erie)
Time:  10:00 am
Cost:  $5 per person, with 1 free chaperone for every 5 paid admissions.
Agenda: Meet us at Port Farms at 10am.  
Bring a sack lunch, we will eat together at 11:30 am in the barn.
Activities: 
We will be taking a wagon ride to the pumpkin patch,
where each student will get to pick their own mini pumpkin to take home (included in price.)

Place:  Battles Museum of Rural Life 
436 Walnut St., Girard, PA (just on the other side of Erie)
Time: Meet there at 9:45 am
Cost: $3.50 per child, $5.50 per adult
Agenda: We will tour both houses.  
Following the tour you are welcome to bring a lunch and picnic on the grounds.
After lunch, for those would like, we'll plan to hike together on their self guided tour trails that include a stop at an old Erie Canal spot.

Fieldtrip #3
Come along this Friday Sept.10 to Erie for the Tall Ships Event. 
We will meet at 10 am sharp to take part in an awesome day of learning. 
We will get dockside presentations on each of the 8 ships, and be able to tour 2 different ships.
There is also a NASA trailer to explore, the maritime museumn and maritime films in the auditorium.  The Land Lighthouse and the Wayne Block House will also be open.
The cost is $5.00 per person.  ( this is a huge savings off reg. admission of $15.) 
There will be a limit of 30 for this trip.
